If you're in the market for an SUV, the 2024 Chevy Equinox and 2024 GMC Terrain are both compelling options. These spacious five-seat SUVs provide plenty of room for both passengers and cargo, so you're well-equipped for any kind of trip. There are some distinct differences worth noting, however, that will help inform your final decision. Carefully consider the 2024 Chevy Equinox vs Terrain to make sure you settle on the right fit for your needs.
Performance
Both the 2024 Chevy Equinox and 2024 GMC Terrain boast a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 175 HP and 203 lb-ft of torque. The Equinox has a six-speed transmission for optimal fuel efficiency. This setup garners 26 MPG city and 31 MPG highway with front-wheel drive or 24 MPG city and 30 MPG highway with all-wheel drive.
Though the Equinox prioritizes efficiency in its overall design, it still delivers enough power to tow up to 3,500 pounds with the Premier 2.0L Equinox model, which makes it a compelling option for families who want to keep fuel costs low while having enough flexibility to do it all when it comes to summer road trips and weekend excursions.
The GMC Terrain has a nine-speed transmission which offers slightly more responsiveness in the drive. However, you'll pay in fuel efficiency for those extra shifts. The Terrain only gets 24 MPG city and 29 MPG highway with front-wheel drive and 23 MPG city and 28 MPG highway with all-wheel drive. The supposed boost to the transmission doesn't significantly improve the driving experience, which is comfortable but notably monotonous. The GMC Terrain has a towing capacity of just 1,500 pounds.
Interior Comfort
Slide inside the Equinox and you'll find premium cloth upholstery. Though ash grey is standard, select trims let you upgrade to a jet-black interior with striking red stitching. The Premier even offers perforated leather-appointed seat trim. The cabin features a black headliner and black ice chrome accents for a modern feel. The center console offers an impressive amount of storage, so you can stash your essentials and then some.
The spacious Chevy Equinox offers 63.9 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume. You'll find 29.9 cubic feet of storage just behind the rear seat. A 60/40 split-folding second-row bench seat provides versatility in your storage arrangements. You'll also enjoy added storage hidden beneath the rear cargo floor.
The GMC Terrain is slightly smaller with 63.3 cubic feet of cargo space. With the second row in place, this goes down to just 29.6 cubic feet. Like the Equinox, the Terrain offers 60/40 split folding seats so you can customize your space. The Terrain SLE features a cloth interior while the SLT, AT4, and Denali offer perforated leather.
Exterior Highlights
The smooth exterior of the 2024 Chevy Equinox features a sleek design that's most compelling in the RS trim with gloss black details notable on the mesh grille and surround, roof rails, window surround, bowtie emblem, and badging. The distinctive lower fascia and inserts, meanwhile, are body-colored. The RS trim has 19-inch Android-painted aluminum wheels and LED headlamps. The lower trims are more understated, with 17-inch aluminum wheels standard on the LS and LT trims.
The 2024 GMC Terrain has a more aggressive exterior with a bold stance and boxy details. Each trim has its own grille design, from the understated SLE to the contrasting SLT to the dark and mysterious AT4. The Denali boasts a larger, more elaborate grille to make sure everyone knows who's coming in this statement vehicle. The Terrain includes GMC's signature C-shaped LED headlights.
Technology and Connectivity
You can access the Chevy Infotainment system in the Equinox via a seven-inch diagonal display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth streaming are standard. If you'd like to upgrade, an eight-inch display is available in select trims and standard for the Premier trim. You can add perks like available Wi-Fi and built-in Alexa.
The GMC Terrain also comes standard with a seven-inch infotainment screen in the SLE. This increases to an eight-inch screen in upper trims. As with the Equinox, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The AT4 and Denali offer an available high-definition surround vision system that gives you a full 360-degree view of your surroundings so you can park and navigate with greater ease. A head-up display is available in these top two trims as well.
Both the Equinox and Terrain come standard with a six-speaker audio system. However, a Bose premium 7-speaker system is available in the upper trim levels for these SUVs.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave both the Equinox and the Terrain a five-star safety rating. The Chevy Equinox provides a full suite of advanced driver assistance and safety features including:

- Automatic emergency braking.

- Following distance indicator.
- Front pedestrian braking.
